Democracy Lab

Democracy Lab - strengthens democracy through lesson-drawing from best national and international practice and co-designing innovative solutions to governance dilemmas.

Democracy Lab creates, builds and pilots new ways of doing democracy and develops innovative ways of visualizing and imagining Australian democracy. Democracy Lab also helps to build the capability of the Australian public service and the community sector to design, deliver and evaluate new forms of democratic governance using codesign, deliberative and digital methods. Recent projects include: the redesign of business.gov.au; and, the establishment of an expert deliberative jury on bridging the trust divide between government and citizen.

We co-host investigations into different aspects of democratic governance, for example:

  • on 16 February 2019 we hosted “Gov 2.0 Taskforce Ten Years On” which reviewed progress with digital democratic governance since the launch of the watershed government report with members of the taskforce and developed an action plan for renewing digital democracy in Australia. A video of the event was streamed across the nation.
  • on 5 February 2020 we launched Platform C with Collaboration for Impact and the Commonwealth Department of Social Services. Platform C is an on-line learning platform for supporting better collaborative governance across Australia; a crucial tool for facilitating trust in government and civic action.

And we submit expert advice to various inquiries such as the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee inquiry into nationhood, national identity and democracy.
